Is Energy and Sports Drinks good for the Teeth?

As we all know that sugar is not good for the overall health, and it is certainly not good for the teeth. Various drinks are the major culprit for tooth enamel damage, and a new research suggests that these drinks are also bearing the fault for the tooth caries in children.

The results of the research have been published in the Journal of General Dentistry, by consuming energy or sports drinks for only as little as 5 days consecutively, the teeth are already exposed to a high risk of decay and enamel damage. Moreover, the energy drinks have proved twice as harmful for the teeth as the sports drinks.
Jennifer Bone, who is the spokesperson for the Academy of General Dentistry says that quite often, patients come to her office with oral health symptoms such as tooth sensitivity or tooth decay, and they simply cannot find a reasonable answer for these symptoms.

Certainly the dentists make a thorough review of the patient's everyday diet or snacking habits, and of course they ask the patients about what type of drinks they do consume. The patients are basically stunned to find out that it is the sports drinks or the energy drinks the ones that cause these symptoms in the first place.

Various studies and researches have analyzed many different types of sports drinks and energy drinks. According to the findings, the sports and the energy drinks from different brands contain different amounts of acidity levels. The researchers even put tooth enamel samples into these drinks in order to notice the damage caused by the fizzy beverages. They allowed these samples to be soaked for about 15 minutes, and then soaked the samples in artificially created saliva.

After a few days, the researchers could notice quite some damages to the tooth enamel on the samples. Dentists around the world highly recommend that people who consume such sports or energy drinks on a regular basis, should always rinse their mouths with water after drinking.

This way, all those bad sugars which will be later transformed into harmful acids by the bacteria, will be flushed away and the damages can be thus avoided.

Why people say “bless you” when you sneeze?

The residents of every country in the world have their own way of wishing sneezers around the globe. Whatever the words they may use, the meaning remains the same; to bless the person who sneezes with good health. You must also have become habituated to say or hear "bless you" when someone sneezes. Have you ever wondered why? What does sneezing has to do with blessings? I mean, have you ever heard someone doing the same when someone coughs or burps? Never, right? Then, what is so special about someone sneezing? Have you ever wondered why? Or what this phrase means?

Well! There are a number of stories behind this practice. In fact, this practice blessing someone who sneezes is found dated far back centuries ago. It is far older a practice then you can even think of. Some say that it was during the outbreak of the deadly plague in Rome. At those times, sneezing was considered as an early symptom of plague and people used to shower their blessing to anyone who sneezed. They believed that their "bless you" could halt the path of the disease.

Some more stories that prevail about this blessing you practice explain that according to a folk belief, people believed that the soul of a person can be thrown out of their body while they sneeze. Another belief says that the sneezing process could otherwise open the body to invasion by evil spirits. Or, perhaps sneezing was a way to force out an invading evil presence by the body. People believed that a "God bless you" or "bless you" could protect the person acting as a sort of shield for the evil forces.
Another belief says that people in the older times felt that the heart stops beating during a sneeze. The people believed their phrase "bless you" could encourage the person's heart to beat again.

Basically, this "bless you" phrase is a way to wish good health to you and to anyone who sneezes. It is a practice that originated thousands of years ago. No exact details could be found though, which could tell you about the start of this practice. Most of these reasons behind blessings while a person sneezes have found to be originated from superstitions from the past. Today, you must be aware about the scientific reason behind sneezing. Sneezing is just a reflex action or is a sign of some cold or allergy. But, you have got so accustomed to this "bless you" phrase that you still persist in the custom of saying "bless you" out of habit or courtesy.

Most Doctors now prefer Digital Interaction

Over 60% of doctors in the country now prefer, one out of three times, digital interaction with their patients as against the traditional face-to-face interaction, indicating a trend where WhatsApp, text messages and E-Mails are increasingly being used for consultations. This is slightly lower, but in keeping with the trend in the US, Japan and China, where a greater number of healthcare professionals (HCPs) — in certain markets, over 90% — have switched to the digital medium, using various mobile apps, blogs, email and text messaging to engage with patients for follow-up consults.

Most Doctors now prefer Digital Interaction

Also, a majority of doctors - globally approx. 60% - demand drug companies combine the use of digital tablets and iPads along with direct interaction when medical representatives (MRs) are detailing the portfolio of medicines. These findings are part of the Digital Savvy Healthcare Practitioner (HCP) 2015, an annual global survey on the digital habits of doctors across the US, Japan, China and India, by healthcare solutions firm Indigene, shared exclusively with TOI. ZIKA Virus Outbreaks

What is Zika virus infection?
Zika virus infection is caused by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, usually causing mild fever, rash, conjunctivitis, and muscle pain.
The virus was isolated for the first time in 1947 in the Zika forest in Uganda. Since then, it has remained mainly in Africa, with small and sporadic outbreaks in Asia.

What are the symptoms?
The most common symptoms of Zika virus infection are mild fever and exanthema (skin rash), usually accompanied by conjunctivitis, muscle or joint pain, and general malaise that begins 2-7 days after the bite of an infected mosquito.

How is Zika virus transmitted?
Zika virus is transmitted to people through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. This is the same mosquito that transmits dengue and chikungunya. In general, the Zika virus needs a means of transportation to infect people. That vector is the mosquito. The virus has also been isolated in semen, and one case of possible person-to-person sexual transmission has been described.

Zika can be transmitted through blood, but this is an infrequent mechanism. The usual recommendations for safe transfusions should be followed (e.g., healthy volunteer donors).

There is little information on transmission from mother to baby during pregnancy or childbirth. Perinatal transmission has been reported with other vector-borne viruses, such as dengue and chikungunya. Studies are now being conducted on possible mother-to-child transmission of the virus and its possible effects on the baby.

What treatment is there?
There is no vaccine or specific drug for this virus. Treatment consists of relieving pain, fever, and any other symptom that inconveniences the patient. To prevent dehydration, it is recommended to control the fever, rest, and drink plenty of water.

What measures should be taken to prevent Zika virus infection?
Prevention involves reducing mosquito populations and avoiding bites, which occur mainly during the day. Eliminating and controlling Aedes aegypti mosquito breeding sites reduces the chances that Zika, chikungunya, and dengue will be transmitted. An integrated response is required, involving action in several areas, including health, education, and the environment.

Manage Anxiety and Stress to achieve peace of mind

Manage Anxiety and Stress to achieve peace of mind

The kids won't stop screaming, your boss has been hounding you because you turned a report in late, and you owe the IRS thousands of dollars you don't have. You're seriously stressed out.

Stress is actually a normal part of life. At times, it serves a useful purpose. Stress can motivate you to get that promotion at work, or run the last mile of a marathon. But if you don't get a handle on your stress and it becomes long-term, it can seriously interfere with your job, family life, and health. According to a study it is found that more than fifty percent of population suffering from stress fight with friends and loved ones and this is all because of stress, and more than 70% say they experience real physical and emotional symptoms from it.

Stress is any demand placed on your brain or physical body. People can report    feeling "stressed" when multiple competing demands are placed on them. The feeling of being "stressed" can be triggered by an event that makes you feel frustrated or nervous. Anxiety is a feeling of fear, worry, or unease.

When you're feeling anxious or stressed, these strategies will help you cope:

  • Take a time-out Practice yoga, listen to music, meditate, get a massage, or learn relaxation techniques. Stepping back from the problem helps clear your head.
  • Eat healthy and balanced meals don't skip any meals. And always keep energy boosting snacks with you.
  • Consume alcohol and caffeine in a limit which can aggravate anxiety and trigger panic attacks.
  • Get enough sleep When stressed, your body needs additional sleep and rest.
  • Exercise daily to help you feel good and maintain your health
  • Take deep breaths Inhale and exhale slowly
  • Count to 10 slowly Repeat, and count to 20 if necessary.
  • Do your best Instead of aiming for perfection, which isn't possible, be proud of however close you get.
  • Accept that you cannot control everything put your stress in perspective: Is it really as bad as you think?
  • Welcome humor a good laugh goes a long way.
  • Maintain a positive attitude Make and effort to replace negative thoughts with positive ones.
  • Get involved Volunteer or find another way to be active in your community, which creates a support network and gives you a break from everyday stress.
  • Learn what triggers your anxiety Is it work, family, school, or something else you can identify? Write in a journal when you're feeling stressed or anxious, and look for a pattern.
  • Talk to someone Tell friends and family you're feeling overwhelmed, and let them know how they can help you. Talk to a physician or therapist for professional help.
Fitness Tips: Stay Healthy, Manage Stress
For the biggest benefits of exercise, try to include at least 2½ hours of moderate-intensity physical activity (e.g. brisk walking) each week, 1¼ hours of a vigorous-intensity activity (such as jogging or swimming laps), or a combination of the two.

  • 5 X 30: Jog, walk, bike, or dance three to five times a week for 30 minutes.
  • Set small daily goals and aim for daily consistency rather than perfect workouts. It's better to walk every day for 15-20 minutes than to wait until the weekend for a three-hour fitness marathon.
  • Find forms of exercise that are fun or enjoyable. Extroverted people often like classes and group activities. People who are more introverted often prefer solo pursuits.
  • Distract yourself with an iPod or other portable media player to download audiobooks, podcasts, or music. Many people find it's more fun to exercise while listening to something they enjoy.
  • Recruit an "exercise buddy." It's often easier to stick to your exercise routine when you have to stay committed to a friend, partner, or colleague.
  • Be patient when you start a new exercise program. Most sedentary people require about four to eight weeks to feel coordinated and sufficiently in shape so that exercise feels easier.
