Top 15 Facts on Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the abnormal growth of a mass of cells, which most often develops on the skin exposed to the sun. Skin cancer types include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma also known as basal cell cancer is the most common type of cancer, which occurs in both older and younger people. Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are highly curable.

Melanoma is much less common than basal and squamous cell carcinoma and the most dangerous type of skin cancer as it can spread to other parts of the body at a very early stage and can be fatal. Melanoma begins in the melanocytes – the cells that make the brown skin pigment known as melanin, which gives the skin its color. The less common types of skin cancer include Kaposi sarcoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and sebaceous gland carcinoma.

What Are The Causes Of Skin Cancer?

The leading reason for high incidence of skin cancer is exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation causes sunburn, premature aging of the skin and damage to the skin cells, which leads to skin cancer. DNA damage increases the chances of developing skin cancer. The DNA damage causes the cells to grow out of control and form a mass of cancer cells.

Skin cancer can also occur in areas that are not exposed to the sun. Lights used in tanning beds emit UV rays that can increase the risk of skin cancer. The chances of developing melanoma triple even while using tanning beds occasionally.

A person’s risk of developing skin cancer depends on factors such as age, genetics, weakened immune system, fair complexion, moles and exposure to some potentially avoidable lifestyle factors (sun exposure and tanning beds). Examining the skin for some dubious changes such as new skin growth, changes in existing moles and birthmarks can help detect skin cancer at the earliest.
Facts On Skin Cancer

1. Globally, two to three million non-melanoma skin cancers and 1,32,000 melanoma skin cancers occur each year. According to statistics, one in every three cancers diagnosed is a skin cancer.

2. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. It occurs in more than a million Americans each year. One in every five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, according to Skin Cancer Foundation Statistics. read more...

Is Green Tea As Good As It Is Said To Be?

Green tea is the healthiest beverage on the planet.

It is loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that have powerful effects on the body.

This includes improved brain function, fat loss, a lower risk of cancer and many other incredible benefits.

Here are 10 health benefits of green tea that have been confirmed in human research studies.

1. Green Tea Contains Various Bioactive Compounds That Can Improve Health

Green tea is more than just green liquid. Many of the bioactive compounds in the tea leaves do make it into the final drink, which contains large amounts of important nutrients. It is loaded with polyphenols like flavonoids and catechins, which function as powerful antioxidants .These substances can reduce the formation of free radicals in the body, protecting cells and molecules from damage. These free radicals are known to play a role in aging and all sorts of diseases. One of the more powerful compounds in green tea is the antioxidant Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG), which has been studied to treat various diseases and may be one of the main reasons green tea has such powerful medicinal properties.Green tea also has small amounts of minerals that are important for health.Try to choose a higher quality brand of green tea, because some of the lower quality brands can contain excessive levels of fluoride .That being said, even if you choose a lower quality brand, the benefits still far outweigh

2. Compounds in Green Tea Can Improve Brain Function and Make You Smarter

Green tea does more than just keep you awake, it can also make you smarter. The key active ingredient is caffeine, which is a known stimulant. It doesn’t contain as much as coffee, but enough to produce a response without causing the “jittery” effects associated with too much caffeine. What caffeine does in the brain is to block an inhibitory neurotransmitter called Adenosine. This way, it actually increases the firing of neurons and the concentration of neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine .Caffeine has been intensively studied before and consistently leads to improvements in various aspects of brain function, including improved mood, vigilance, reaction time and memory .However… green tea contains more than just caffeine. It also has the amino acid L-theanine, which is able to cross the blood-brain barrier.            L-theanine increases the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, which has anti-anxiety effects. It also increases dopamine and the production of alpha waves in the brain .Studies show that caffeine and L-theanine can have synergistic effects. Thecombination of the two is particularly potent at improving brain function .Because of the L-theanine and the smaller dose of caffeine, green tea can give you a much milder and different kind of “buzz” than coffee. Many people report having more stable energy and being much more productive when they drink green tea, compared to coffee.

3. Green Tea Increases Fat Burning and Improves Physical Performance

If you look at the ingredients list for any fat burning supplement, chances are that green tea will be on there. This is because green tea has been shown to increase fat burning and boost the metabolic rate, in human controlled trials .In one study in 10 healthy men, green tea increased energy expenditure by 4% .Another study showed that fat oxidation was increased by 17%, indicating that green tea may selectively increase the burning of fat .However, I’d like to point out that some studies on green tea don’t show any increase in metabolism, so the effects may depend on the individual .Caffeine itself has also been shown to improve physical performance by mobilizing fatty acids from the fat tissues and making them available for use as energy .In two separate review studies, caffeine has been shown to increase physical performance by 11-12%, on average.

4. Antioxidants in Green Tea May Lower Your Risk of Various Types of Cancer

Cancer is caused by uncontrolled growth of cells. It is one of the world’s leading causes of death. It is well known that oxidative damage contributes to the development of cancer and that antioxidants can have a protective effect .Green tea is an excellent source of powerful antioxidants, so it makes perfect sense that it could reduce your risk of cancer, which it appears to do:

Breast cancer: A meta-analysis of observational studies found that women who drank the most green tea had a 22% lower risk of developing breast cancer, the most common cancer in women .

Prostate cancer: One study found that men drinking green tea had a 48% lower risk of developing prostate cancer, which is the most common cancer in men .

Colorectal cancer: A study of 69,710 Chinese women found that green tea drinkers had a 57% lower risk of cancer .

Multiple other observational studies show that green tea drinkers are significantly less likely to get various types of cancer .It is important to keep in mind that it may be a bad idea to put milk in your tea, because it can reduce the antioxidant value .

5. Green Tea May Protect Your Brain in Old Age, Lowering Your Risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s

Not only can green tea improve brain function in the short term, it may also protect your brain in old age. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common neurodegenerative disease in humans and a leading cause of dementia.Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease and involves the death of dopamine producing neurons in the brain.Multiple studies show that the catechin compounds in green tea can have various protective effects on neurons in test tubes and animal models, potentally lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s . read more

Want flat abs? Here’s what to eat and what to avoid

Along with the right exercise the quest for flat abs often hinges on what you’re eating most of us want flat abs but often the kinds of foods we are eating get in the way of achieving that goal (yes, even with the help of copious amounts of stomach crunches!). If you want to be rocking a flat tummy this summer, then it's time to make some diet tweaks starting now.

 Don’t combine fruit and protein

Don’t get us wrong, fruit and protein are both essential for good health but combining the both of them can lead to tummy troubles. “Protein takes time to break down in the digestive system, is a long burner, and provides satiation. However a piece of fruit is a fast burning carbohydrate. Sometimes the combination of the two foods together create havoc in the gut - not for all but for many,” says nutritionist and founder of A Healthy View Michele Chevalley Hedge.

Eat lots of fruits and vegetables

A constipated bowel leads to a bloated tummy. “To maintain optimum digestion drink plenty of water, exercise daily, and eat fibrous fruit, vegetables and whole real, nutrient-dense food,” says Chevalley Hedge. It sounds simple, and yes you’ve heard it before but fruits and vegetables are key to not only feeling great but looking great.

Watch your intake of wheat products

How you start your day can often impact on the state of your abs. “If you start the day with flat abs and don’t want boat by 10 am then skip bread,” says Chevalley Hedge. “I try not to ‘discrimate’ against any food groups however it is often the wheat in heavily processed foods that makes us go from flat tummy to puffy tummy in minutes. It is often foods that we have sensitivities to that create a bloated stomach - it doesn’t mean we are allergic to them, it just simply means our body isn’t loving that food group at the moment."

Skip the fast food

There’s no getting around it – if you want a flat tummy you’re going to have to stay away from fast food.
“Many fast foods are loaded with sugar, Tran’s fats, and are very low in fibre. This means that you are not getting the vitamins B s that convert tryptophan to serotonin which slows digestion (a major cause of tummy bloat) and creates blood sugar deregulations which leads to weight gain.”

Keep alcohol to a minimum

Not only are alcoholic beverages high in calories, drinking one drink can often lead to drinking many and before you know it you’ve just drunk a lot of empty calories for not much benefit. Aim to keep your alcohol intake to a minimum.

Minimise your sugar intake

The bad gut bacteria, candida loves sugar. It is hard to get flat abs if your gut is full of bad bacteria causing poor digestion, flatulence and bloating. Watch your sweet tooth and avoid high sugar foods such as soft drinks and lollies.

Acupuncture as a Remedy for Back Pain

If you suffer from back pain you probably would not consider acupuncture as a treatment until you have exhausted many other alternatives. However, acupuncture is a type of ancient Chinese medicine that's been around for over 2,500 years and throughout this time it has been used for back pain relief, increasingly so in these modern times.

While it is not traditionally a part of western medicine, nowadays your doctor is quite likely to send you for this treatment if you are suffering from back or neck pain either persistently or due to accident or injury.

If you are going to have this therapy you may want to know a little about how it works. The general belief is that the body has 20 energy flow patterns called meridians or pathways. Through these pathways it is thought that the life force or vital energy flows, this is known as the qi (it is pronounced chee) and is considered to be essential to maintain good health. There are over 2,000 points on our bodies that connect with these pathways and it is at these points which the hair-thin needles are inserted, this is done in varying specific combinations depending on the treatment required. These actions are believed to either correct the flow of qi or to reinforce it.

Even though it cannot be proven that this works as a type of pain relief, it is thought that as a result the central nervous system is stimulated. Most patients say that they get a pins and needles sensation on the insertion of the needles and indeed into the duration of the treatment, which usually lasts about 15 to 30 minutes. Some people report that they feel energised or even very relaxed so it appears as if the effect can be is somewhat different depending on the individual.

The acupuncturist will use up to 20 metallic needles during a treatment session and the depth they are inserted is dependent upon the area, deeper muscular or fatty areas need more penetration and the scalp for example would be just below the surface. The practitioner may turn the needles one way or another depending on what they are trying to achieve, in my personal experience they were turned on insertion, then again about half way through the treatment. At no point is the treatment painful, there is a mere sensation of the needles going in and they do not feel sharp at all, this is because unlike needles used for injections, an acupuncture needle's tip come to a smooth point without sharp edges. They are also very thin, about 20 times thinner than a hypodermic needle. In my experience the most troublesome part of the treatment is lying in the same position without moving for up to 30 minutes, especially if you suffer from back pain or similar.

Although there are many medical experts who believe acupuncture is an effective way to treat certain conditions such as back pain, there is no true consensus. Some adhere to the theories of qi and meridians whilst others attribute acupuncture's benefits to the biological changes that are brought about in the body as a result of treatment. Needless to say there will always be the skeptics who deny that acupuncture has any effect at all, but in my opinion if you are suffering from ongoing back pain it is certainly worth trying.

Can Exercise Be Harmful For You?

We all know that exercise can surely boost the quality of sleep. But what about intense exercise? Is it good or bad for your sleep? Well, a new research found that intense workouts may gradually decline the quality of sleep. The same research says that people who intensely workout need to consume more carbs to minimize the effects of exercise on sleep.

The study was conducted on 13 people who were allowed to embrace intense workouts during the tenure. Apart from the quality of sleep, researchers also kept an eye on the moods of the participants and their average performance.

At the end, it was concluded that over exercising can progressively decline the quality of sleep. In the research, the participants failed to enjoy deep sleep during the days when they over trained. As days passed by, even the performance declined due to lack of quality of sleep. Well, how much is too much when it comes to over training? Well, this depends upon a lot of factors as we are all different in various ways.

But yes, your gym trainer can determine how much your body can take as he must be observing your strength and endurance levels on a daily basis.
